Gabriele Piana is one of the stars of ADAC GT4 Germany and among the most popular drivers in the paddock. In an interview, the Italian reveals what he likes about the series, and what situation he found embarrassing.
He is one of the really big characters in ADAC GT4 Germany: Gabriele Piana (39) is the only driver to have contested all 85 races in the history of the series – and with outstanding success. The Italian won the Drivers’ Championship in 2021, and has finished runner-up on a further three occasions (2019, 2020, 2024). Piana has won 18 races and started from pole position six times. Speaking in an interview, Piana looks back on his time so far in ADAC GT4 Germany.
Gabriele, you are the most experienced and successful driver in ADAC GT4 Germany, and one of the poster boys. What has been the best moment of your eight years in the series.
Piana: “Winning the title in 2021 is obviously the real highlight. On the whole, I really enjoyed the time with Michael Schrey. Twice we won five races in a season – something nobody else has achieved. However, we actually managed to miss out on the title despite winning five races in 2024 (laughs). I also look back fondly on the Sachsenring in 2023. That was one of the best races of my career. Generally speaking, I feel extremely happy in this series.”
What was your worst moment during that time?
“By far the most awful memory is the Saturday race at the 2021 finale at the Nürburgring, when I drove past the garage and we almost lost the title as a result. I would not wish that kind of thing on my worst enemy. That was really embarrassing. However, sometimes you need these low moments to continue to grow.”
How has ADAC GT4 Germany developed since 2019?
“The standard has been raised consistently. The series has improved every year, and constantly features more competitive cars. Everything has become far more professional – including the teams. That is motorsport for you. We are all in it to win.”
Why do you return to ADAC GT4 Germany every year? What is it that makes the series so appealing?
“I have actually turned down Formula 1 twice, just to race in ADAC GT4 Germany (laughs). But in all seriousness, I find ADAC GT4 Germany really excellent. I like the format with two sprint races. The race weekends on the DTM platform, which attract such big crowds, are outstanding. And the circuits are super. On a national level, there is no GT4 championship in the world that is as competitive.”
What do you enjoy about being in the GT4 cockpit?
“GT4 cars have a little less grip and less aerodynamics than GT3 cars. As such, they are not quite as sensitive. That means: even if you lose a few parts in collisions during the race, the car is still almost exactly the same to drive. You can always battle or overtake on the outside. Compared to GT3, it is more about managing grip than peak performance.”
Since 2019, ADAC GT4 Germany has visited eight circuits. Which is your favourite?
“That has to be Oschersleben! I just like the circuit, and I have always been really successful there. I also found Zandvoort great, before the modifications. The track was very special.”
What are your plans for the future? Will you remain in the series?
“I would happily stay in ADAC GT4 Germany for another ten years. The series is like a home to me. Plus, I am intrigued to see how it develops and what else we will get to experience. Furthermore, I am already looking forward to the next generation of GT4. I just love GT4 racing.”
