Keanu Al-Azhari takes pole position by a whisker

A thrilling qualifying session saw Keanu Al-Azhari (17/UAE, Mühlner Motorsport) secure pole position for race two of the Prototype Cup Germany at Spa-Francorchamps. Just 0.009 seconds behind the pole-setter was rookie Bjerre Jakobsen (18/DEN, BWT Mücke Motorsport). Third place for Sven Barth (44/Eberbach) made it a good return to the Prototype Cup Germany for the Aust Motorsport team.

Three minutes before the end of qualifying, Keanu Al-Azhari move to the top of the timings, replacing Maksymilian Angelard (17/POL, BWT Mücke Motorsport), who had led the way to that point. Mattias Bjerre Jakobsen was second at this point, and managed to hold onto that position. His final assault on pole position ended with a spin, forcing the Dane to settle for second place. “Despite that, I am still happy with the result. I am getting more and more confidence in the car, and I can feel that I am improving all the time. To be honest, I did not expect to finish second in my first qualifying in the Prototype Cup Germany.”

One place ahead of him was a beaming Al-Azhari. “Having had issues with the fuel pump yesterday, which meant I was unable to take part in qualifying, the team worked long and hard to solve the problem. As such, I am delighted to present them with the pole position. I could actually have gone faster, but made a mistake on what was looking like being my fastest lap. Fortunately, however, it was still good enough to put me at the front of the grid – although it was a very, very close affair with Mattias.”

Sven Barth from Aust Motorsport will start race two of the Spa weekend from third place. “I already feel comfortable in the Ligier, simply because it is a far better fit for my size than the Duqueine, which I drove at the start of last year. That aside, the car was really good in qualifying. Unfortunately, I was unable to take full advantage of the tyres when they were at their best, but I am happy with the result. I think Maxim and I have a good chance of getting a decent result in the race.”

Pavel Lefterov (27/BUL, Konrad Motorsport) was fourth fastest in his first qualifying in the Prototype Cup Germany, ahead of Angelard, Mikkel C. Johansen (37/DEN, Gebhardt Intralogistics Motorsport), Alexzander Kristiansson (25/SWE, Gebhardt Intralogistics Motorsport) and Thomas Ambiel (45/Eppingen, Rinaldi Racing).
