They share a cockpit and together scrap for every thousandth of a second out on the track – but what makes them tick away from the steering wheel. The ADAC GT Masters drivers answer personal questions about themselves and their team-mates. From cooking skills to temperament: how do the driving partners feel about each other. Today it’s the turn of championship leaders Felix Hirsiger and Finn Zulauf, who share a Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo 2 for Liqui Moly Team Engstler Motorsport.
Which of you is an early riser, and who prefers to sleep in?
Felix Hirsiger: Finn is the one who sleeps in!
Finn Zulauf: Yes, I like to sleep in. When it comes down to it, Felix is part of the workforce – unlike me, who is still a student (laughs).
Felix Hirsiger: Yes, a self-employed entrepreneur cannot afford to sleep as much as a guy at university (laughs). I always get up between six and seven o’clock, but also go to bed late. Unfortunately, I am rather a short-sleeper.
Which of you is the better cook?
Finn Zulauf: Definitely me. I do a lot of cooking for myself, because, unlike Felix, I have to watch what I eat, to manage my weight. On a weekend, Felix eats schnitzel, curried sausage, and basically anything he wants. And despite all that, he is still thinner than me (laughs).
Felix Hirsiger: I basically don’t cook. People cook for me, and if not, then I go out to eat (laughs). My girlfriend has picked out everything you need in the kitchen, because, to be honest, I used to have little to nothing at all. When we see each other, she does the cooking.
Who is the most impatient?
Felix Hirsiger: I would say that I am. I sometimes get the feeling that Finn has absolutely no sense of urgency, or inclination to reply to messages.
Finn Zulauf: You’re not exactly a role model in that regard (laughs). Having said that, he is good at answering my messages – but I suspect that is not the case with everyone.
Which of you pays most attention to detail?
Finn Zulauf: I believe we are both about the same. You have to be, too, if you want to be really good.
Felix Hirsiger: I would say that I pay a lot of attention to detail, because it clears my head and allows me to focus on driving. Finn does it differently, perhaps because he is younger. But, as long as everything works out, he can happily keep doing it his way.
Finn Zulauf: I have different traits: for example, I can only drive in 20 or 22 degrees, it always has to be an even number – it is the same with the TV volume. That is non-negotiable for me (laughs).
Which of you is spontaneous, and who prefers to plan things?
Felix Hirsiger: I am a planner!
Finn Zulauf: I am more spontaneous. If someone asks me in the morning whether I would like to go on holiday with them, I will just ask where and get on with packing. My studies obviously allow that in the summer.
Which of you is most competitive?
Finn Zulauf: We are both equally competitive. Let’s take the second race at the Lausitzring as an example – when we finished fifth. Others would have been pleased with that, but we both took off from the circuit immediately.
Which of you is tidier?
Felix Hirsiger: That is really funny, as Finn is not tidy at all. His just leaves his helmet and all his belongings lying around.
Finn Zulauf: That is a completely different story at home, where I hate mess. For example, my espresso machine gets a complete clean-out after every single cup.
Which of you is the most punctual?
Felix Hirsiger: Me!
Finn Zulauf: No, no! I am also really punctual. I am always later than Felix, because that is my form of time management. However, I am always on time. I set an alarm for everything, even for setting off to the circuit. I set the alarm to tell me when I need to get out of the shower. I am perfectly in sync with my own schedule. If I am driving, I am on time. If Felix is driving, I always arrive five minutes before he sets off.
Which of you is more extrovert?
Finn Zulauf: Similar. Neither of us are the kind of person to run around yelling outside, but we both have no problem chatting openly to people. I think when you work a lot with adults and have to be independent at an early age, then you don’t really have a problem talking to people.
Felix Hirsiger: I think that also has to do with our age.
Which of you is more willing to compromise?
Felix Hirsiger: That is a very tricky topic (laughs). I am prepared to compromise, to a certain degree, when it comes to the overall picture. I am a Taurus, and it is important to me that everyone is happy and it is okay for everyone. However, it is hard for me to make compromises when it comes to racing and work – because there is so much on the line. For example, I never have to compromise with Finn. He has his fad when it comes to eating, and never goes to restaurants, while I really like to. But we each do our own thing, and it works out nicely that way. We are pain-free when it comes to each other. With that I mean: if something just works, you don’t have to make any major compromises.
Finn Zulauf: We go out for a meal together once on a race weekend. That is very good, because, although our driving styles are very slightly different, we still always manage to find a good set-up for us both. We hardly have to compromise in that regard either.
Who is most impulsive?
Felix Hirsiger: That is probably me, but I have calmed down a bit these days. That is probably also something that comes with age.
Finn Zulauf: I would say that I know when I can be impulsive, and when it is not the right time. That is probably the most important thing. I naturally let out a bit of frustration over the radio sometimes, but I assume that every engineer has to put up with that a bit.
Which of you is more creative?
Finn Zulauf: I am not creative, that much is clear.
Felix Hirsiger: My mother says that I am a ‘life artist’. By that she means that I am not creative when it comes to art, but am creative when it comes to finding a way of getting what I want.
Who is happiest to take risks?
Felix Hirsiger: I am very willing to take risks – really, very!
Finn Zulauf: He is in the car trade. You don’t earn any money if you are not willing to take risks in that business.
Felix Hirsiger: You never earn money in any field if you are a businessman who does not take risks.
Which of you is most irritable?
Felix Hirsiger: I think I am very irritable, if you catch me at the wrong time. But I am also 0.0 percent irritable when I am at one with the world.
Finn Zulauf: It is a similar story with me. My girlfriend definitely has a story or two that she could tell you (laughs).
Who is the optimist, and which of you is the pessimist?
Felix Hirsiger: We are both optimists. There is no room for pessimism here. We are obviously realists and can assess situations correctly, but we also both take an optimistic approach to things and make the best of any situation. If we get out of the car and say that we have given it our all and there is absolutely nothing we could have done better, and the result does not meet our expectations, then we are briefly disappointed – but life goes on.
Finn Zulauf: I look at it a similar way. Pessimists don’t win anything. There are so many studies, which show that results are dependent upon your mindset. What good does it do me if I spend my time thinking about what might go wrong?
