Off the track: Eduardo Coseteng and Julian Hanses

Eduardo Coseteng and Julian Hanses shared the BMW M4 GT3 Evo of FK Performance Motorsport in the ADAC GT Masters. A good relationship, trust and mutual respect are essential, in order to be able to perform out on the track. But aside from tenths of seconds, tyre pressure and set-up, how well do the two team-mates really know each other? The answer, and a few anecdotes, can be found in this rather different interview.

Which of you would find a hotel?

Julian Hanses: “I always book at the last minute, just a few days beforehand.”

Eduardo Coseteng: “We come to the test day and I ask Julian which hotel he is staying in. He just grins and says ‘no idea’.” (Laughs)

Julian Hanses: “Ah yes, I hadn’t actually booked a hotel in Zandvoort. However, that has only happened once, and I did find some accommodation for the race weekend – although it was last minute.” (Laughs)

Which of you has the bigger suitcase?

Eduardo Coseteng: “I think my suitcase is larger. After all, I always have to bring everything from Asia. However, Julian’s suitcase is bigger at the race weekend itself. He really has something to cover all eventualities. A very fashionable team-mate.” (Laughs)

Julian Hanses: “I like to perform, both on and off the track.” (General laughter).

Which of you is most likely to leave something at home?

Julian Hanses: “I have forgotten my tickets before, but never more than that.”

Eduardo Coseteng: “I did once forget my socks for a test day, so I had to wear my normal socks.” (Laughs)

Which of you is most punctual?

Julian Hanses: “I am always on time.”

Eduardo Coseteng: “I am also punctual, but only arrive when I absolutely have to be there. If Julian is driving for qualifying, I am there as he exits the pit lane.” (Laughs)

Julian Hanses: “Even when you are doing qualifying, I am still there before you.” (Laughs)

Who has the best taste when it comes to food?

Julian Hanses: “I’ll eat anything, so perhaps you.”

Eduardo Coseteng: “Yes, maybe me. Particularly Asian cuisine. I usually choose the restaurant.”

Which of you is the most chaotic?

Julian Hanses: “I would say that I have a lot of energy. I am a tidy person and do not live in a mess, but I am very energetic.” (Laughs)

Which of you is most likely to have a heated discussion with your engineer or team principal?

Eduardo Coseteng: “That will be me. I am pretty loud over the radio. I just like to hear my voice, and you cannot hear yourself over the engine if you are not loud.” (Laughs)

Which of you is most addicted to using your mobile phone?

Eduardo Coseteng: “I would say that I am (laughs). As soon as I have a spare minute, I am straight on my phone.”

Julian Hanses: “I don’t actually use my phone very much.”

Which of the classic apps do you have open?

Eduardo Coseteng: “Absolutely everything. My whole life is on this device.” (Laughs)

Which of you has the most annoying habit, and what is it?

Julian Hanses: “I would say I do, because I am always brim-full of energy.”

Eduardo Coseteng: “I am actually always really relaxed, while he is always extremely dynamic and enthusiastic when he enters the room, and immediately starts talking (laughs). But I prefer that to having a team-mate who is too serious or grumpy.”

Which of your partner’s attributes would you gladly adopt?

Eduardo Coseteng: “Julian’s friendliness and open-mindedness towards everybody else.”

Julian Hanses: “Your coolness. You are never hectic, always relaxed and, given your age, you are able to cope very well with situations without getting frustrated – you never lose your patience.”

Eduardo Coseteng: “I think that is because most of the time I don’t grasp what is actually going on around me.”
