ADAC Formel 4·19.5.2018

Maiden win for New Zealander Liam Lawson: Lirim Zendeli retires just before the end - Fittipaldi and Wishofer on the podium

Liam Lawson (16, New Zealand, Van Amersfoort Racing) won the seventh ADAC Formula 4 race of the season at the Lausitzring, taking his maiden victory in the ADAC's high-speed school. Lawson took the win from Enzo Fittipaldi (16, Brazil, Prema Theodore Racing) and Mick Wishofer (18, Austria, US Racing CHRS) in an action-packed race which was stopped for a short time. Championship leader Lirim Zendeli (18, Germany, US Racing CHRS) retired just before the end. Ido Cohen (16, Israel, ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg e.V.) in eighth place was best Rookie.

"I feel great, for sure! I dropped behind initially and would never have thought I could still win," said Lawson. "But anything is always possible in a race. I was a bit lucky, but what does it matter - we were quick, and that's what counts ultimately."

Pole-sitter Zendeli stayed in P1 at the start and was in the lead going into the first turn, followed by Frederik Vesti (16, Denmark, Van Amersfoort Racing), Wishofer and David Schumacher (16, Germany, US Racing CHRS). There was a contact between Schumacher and Charles Weerts (17, Belgium, Van Amersfoort Racing) in the second lap and then eight drivers spun off a dirty track shortly after, including Vesti, who was in second place in the championship. The race was stopped and eventually restarted with five minutes on the clock.

Zendeli won the restart but retired with a technical problem shortly before the end. Lawson took the lead and the win at the finish line. Guest entrant Konsta Lappalainen (15, Finland, KIC Driving Academy) finished fourth behind Fittipaldi and Wishofer. Andreas Estner (17, Germany, Neuhauser Racing) was fifth, followed by Leonardo Lorandi (17, Italy, KDC Racing) and Aaron di Comberti (17, Great Britain, KDC Racing). Cohen took eighth place from Schumacher in P9. Weerts completed the Top Ten.
