Champion Zendeli secures his tenth win of season : Kerpen-based outfit make a clean sweep

Champion Lirim Zendeli (18, Germany) took his tenth win of the season in the final ADAC Formula 4 race and also helped secure the title in the team competition for US Racing CHRS along with his team-mates and Rookie champion, David Schumacher (16, Germany). In the 20th race of the ADAC High-Speed Academy at the Hockenheimring, Zendeli finished on the top rung of the podium from eighth on the grid. Schumacher cemented his win in the classification for best newcomer by going on a charge up the field from 14th place. And so, the Kerpen-based outfit led by team bosses Gerhard Ungar and Schumacher's father, Ralf, have now taken all three titles in the ADAC junior series. Zendeli has won half of all of this season's 20 ADAC Formula 4 races. Team Principal Ralf Schumacher was delighted with the title win: "Yesterday, things in the team competition were still a bit close, but today, both drivers, plus David and Lirim as always, did a great job. We're now just savouring the moment, because it doesn't happen every day of the week. So, well done to the whole team for working incredibly hard and being focused."

Zendeli told us after the final race: "That was the perfect way to round off the season with my tenth victory. I've now won half of all the races. I wanted to secure my hat-trick with three race wins in one weekend, but unfortunately, that never worked out. Still, I'm highly delighted to have taken two wins. It's how I was able to help the team clinch the championship." In the end, US Racing CHRS secured 562 points to the 521 of Dutch team Van Amersfoort Racing and 416 of Italy's Prema Theodore Racing.

Liam Lawson (16, New Zealand, Van Amersfoort Racing) was crowned championship runner-up after a race that involved plenty of overtaking. He finished in 16th place while his main rival, Enzo Fittipaldi (17, USA/Brazil, Prema Theodore Racing), was only 14th. And so, the season ended with Zendeli on 348 points, Lawson on 234 and Fittipaldi 223.

Weather conditions were excellent initially as Formula 4 champion Zendeli gained position after position on Sunday right at the start of the race. Schumacher also showed his class with several overtaking manoeuvres. Charles Weerts (17, Van Amersfoort Racing) started from fourth place on the grid and pushed forwards on the second lap. Zendeli overtook Belgian driver Weerts on Lap 11 and retained the lead despite the onset of rain shortly before the end of the race and the safety car period that ensued as a result.

On a side note - during the season finale which attracted more than 25,000 spectators over the weekend to the historic track in Baden-Württemberg, the ADAC announced that the ADAC Formula 4 will be back racing in 2019 alongside the ADAC GT Masters in Germany as well as at the Red Bull Ring in Austria and Zandvoort in the Netherlands. A race weekend under the banner of Formula 1 and the Mercedes-Benz Formula 1 Grand Prix of Germany is also at the planning stage. The ADAC are already in talks about that with Formula 1. SPORT1 will again carry reports about all the races of the ADAC High-Speed Academy.
